Brush Settings for your Wacom Tablet
April 20th, 2007 – ikeman
I’ve heard several complaints from first time Wacom users - frustrated with the stylus not performing like a pencil or other real mediums. My first question to those people is - “Have you adjusted your brush settings?” More often than not they say no … or say that they don’t know what to set there brush settings at. So, in an effort to educate I’m creating this little tutorial.
First things first. Locate your brush settings panel in Photoshop CS1 +. Window>Brushes (F5) Now that you’re in the brush settings panel you can follow the different configurations for brushes below:
My Favorite - Multi-Purpose Brush (click image to see full-size)
Sketching - #2 Pencil (click image to see full-size)
Well, that should get you started. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little with the settings for your desired results. Check back often … I’ll try to add more brushes to this list on a periodic basis.

Hey, thanks for this. I just got a Wacom tablet the other day - and this is exactly what I wanted to read.
Good job!

I’m having trouble with my tablet. The pen pressure thing doesn’t work, the brush keeps staying the same thickness even when I vary my pressure on the pen. I’ve tried the settings above but it still doesn’t work. How do I change my settings to correct that?

evon - It sounds like the trouble you’re having has to do with the setup of your Wacom… try re-installing it. Go to wacom.com for the newest drivers. After you’ve re-installed your wacom tablet there is a simple test you can perform… lift your stylus a few inches above the tablet and then touch it down in the one of the corners of the tablet… your cursor should be in the exact same place on the screen. Then lift your stylus again and place it in the opposite corner - if your cursor jumps to the corresponding corner, then you know everything is set-up right. Now open up Photoshop and try my settings again… I hope that helps.
